Below, you will find an unedited excerpt from my new book about building Internet-based businesses, Online Business from Scratch. To receive updates about the book, visit www.fromscratchbook.com.
If you’re having trouble coming up with ideas for potential niches, there are several strategies you can use to come up with ideas for your niche:
- Consider Your Hobbies – What are your hobbies? What do you during your free time? Many people have successfully built businesses around their hobbies. Don’t automatically assume that you can’t monetize your hobby. There are people that make money by playing video games all day and streaming their games over the Internet for other people to watch, so there’s probably a way for you to make money from your hobby too.
- Review at Your Work Experience – What do you do for a day job? What are you particularly good at? Is there anything that you have personal work experience with that could become your niche?
- Check Your Bookmarks – There’s a pretty good chance that the websites you visit most often are bookmarked in your web browser. If there are multiple websites that you have bookmarked that are in similar niches, that’s a pretty good indication it’s a niche you should consider.
- Look at the Media You Consume – What kind of books do you read? Do you listen to any podcasts? What television shows do you watch? Are there any common themes among the books, TV shows and podcasts that you consume?
- Review Example Lists – Perform a Google Search for “niche ideas” and similar keywords. There are dozens of different lists of niches that people have published online. Scan through these lists to see if there’s anything that interests you.
